Paul Kern
Paul Kern
Expedition Climber

Paul Kern is from Simpelveld, a town nestled in the southeastern portion of The Netherlands that resembles a finger separating Brussels, Belgium from Cologne, Germany.  He is 45 years old, married with one son, and a metal worker by profession.  As might be expected from someone who makes a hobby out of climbing mountains, Paul enjoys active sports such as running and cycling.  To relax, he enjoys playing billiards and has an appetite for good food.

Kern has been an avid hiker for over 20 years.  He met Frank Stevelmans at a basic mountaineering course in Chamonix, France and together they completed an advanced course in Austria.  When Henk Bezema invited Frank to join the Denali expedition, it was natural that Paul would also be included since he had been Stevelmans' climbing partner before.

The trio of Henk, Frank and Paul make up the Netherlands contingent for this international expedition.  They have spent time together this past winter on training climbs in the Alps, however, the severe weather and extreme avalanche danger this past winter has made it difficult for them to go as often as planned.  Paul and Frank run several times a week together as part of their physical conditioning for Denali.
