Meals will provide approximately 4,500 calories/day to meet the demands of expedition exertion. Hopefully, the food will be reaonably appetizing. This is important because as the team progresses up the mountain, the altitude diminishes their appetite. Just when their bodies desperately need abundant food and water, their desire for it decreases. A climber is usually forcing themselves to eat and drink. Therefore, it helps if it tastes good.
All meals are planned in advance and the ingredients are purchased in bulk. The food is repackaged into lightweight sealable plastic bags for rations of five men for one day, and then labeled by date and preparation instructions. Next, the rations are combined into three-day supplies in stuff sacks and the weight distributed evenly among team members to carry on their sleds. As the expedition progresses and food is consumed, the weight is redistributed.
Lunches and snacks are dispersed to each climber at breakfast, and these become the responsibility of each member to carry and ration their own allotment. If a climber cannot consume their entire ration, or chooses to maintain a surplus for a future need, they are responsible for carrying it.
The expedition's full menu is detailed below. In addition to what is listed, there is an ample supply of assorted powdered drinks such as Tang, Gatorade, tea and coffee. The Tang and Gatorade can be a hot or cold drink (melted glacier water is not always very appealing). Also, there are several days of food contained in the emergency caches, and those meals are very similar to the regular rations. Finally, you can see that many of the meals are repeated often throughout the expedition. In those cases, the ingredients are changed slightly at the higher altitudes to increase the intake of calories and some nutrients.
Some days have an instant desert for variety and as an added treat. All dinners include a "hot wet" soup or drink to warm the body before retiring to bed and to maintain hydration. Those such drinks which are listed as "hot wet surprise" and "hot wet nasty" are various soup and drink mixes, but exactly what they are Kent forgot when he repackaged them. So, these will be as much a mystery to the climbers as they are to you.
